How to use triphala powder
The most traditional form is a powder (churna), which can be taken in various ways. The recommended dosage is typically ½ to 2 teaspoons, but it is best to start with a smaller dose to see how your body reacts.
Internal use (for digestion, immunity, and overall health)
- With warm water: Mix 1–2 teaspoons of triphala powder into a glass of warm (not hot) water. Stir well and drink on an empty stomach.
- For detoxification and rejuvenation: Drink it first thing in the morning.
- For constipation relief: Drink it at night, about 30–60 minutes before bed, to stimulate morning bowel movements.
- With honey or ghee: For a more palatable taste, you can mix the powder with honey or ghee (clarified butter).
- As a tea: Simmer 1 teaspoon of triphala powder in one cup of water for about 5 minutes. Strain and drink warm.
External use (for skin and hair)
- Face mask: Combine triphala powder with a base like coconut oil or rose water to create a paste. Apply it to your face, leave for 15 minutes, and then rinse with warm water.
- Hair wash: Create a decoction by boiling the powder in water. After it cools, massage the liquid into your scalp for 2–3 minutes before rinsing with plain water. This can help prevent dandruff and premature graying.
- Eye wash: Soak 1 teaspoon of powder in 50 ml of water overnight. Strain the water through a fine cloth in the morning and splash it on your eyes. Use under professional guidance.
Precautions and side effects
While generally safe, keep the following in mind:
- Start with a small dose: A high dose can cause mild side effects like diarrhea, bloating, and stomach upset.
- Stay hydrated: Triphala can have a dehydrating effect, so drink plenty of water.
- Not for everyone: Pregnant or breastfeeding women, children, and people with certain medical conditions should consult a doctor before use.
- Medication interactions: Triphala may interact with some medications, such as blood thinners and diabetes drugs. Consult your healthcare provider, especially if you are taking other medicines
